Definition

A noun is a naming word that refers to the name of everything.  It can be a name of a person, place, thing, idea, event, etc.

Ex: Ali, Man, Pakistan, New York, Election, Beauty, Truth, etc.

Functions of Nouns

There are many functions of nouns. A noun can function as a subject, object (direct, indirect), adverb, adjective, object of a preposition, or possession.

1.    Subject:

When a noun is a doer of an action,  Its function is considered as a subject.

Ali is fixing my car. 

Students play in the ground.

2.    Direct Object:

We can use a noun to receive an action directly. 

He bought a new car

I sent him a letter

3.    Indirect Object:

We can also use a noun to receive an action indirectly. 

Jamal bought Ali a gift.

Ali sent Jamal a letter.

4.    Object of a Preposition:

A noun can function as an object of a preposition. 

He sang phrases of peace.

They gave us gifts of flowers.

5.    Adverb:

The function of a noun can also be as an adverb. 

We left New York yesterday.

We left him there.

6.    Adjective:

A noun can be used to function as an adjective. 

I know our bus driver.

Have you missed your school bus?

7.    Possession:

By using an apostrophe and ‘s’, a noun shows possession.

Ali’s son is a very genius student.

Today, I met Ali's father.
